What is an affiliate?

An affiliate is someone who can turn their website traffic into income by joining affiliate programmes, and sending their visitors to many merchants selling products and services over the internet. You get to choose whether you want to advertise a website or products from a website (so you could run an online store with products from another website and not have the responsibilities of stock, packaging, shipping & the customer).

How it works is simple! By joining affiliate networks or private affiliate programmes, you can earn commission on sales that you have generated on another website e.g. you place an advertisement on your website that when clicked directs your traffic to someone elses website. Lets say for this instance an online store, when that visitor purchases something from that store you make money!

This is made possible as each affiliate is given a unique link which they can place on their website, so when someone clicks on that link, the affiliate programme host can track the affiliate responsible for generating that lead or sale.

By becoming an affiliate (this can also be via an individual or company) you send visitors from your website to another website in exchange for a percentage of a sale or a set payment (commission).

Commissions can be earned through:

- Pay per click advertisements - Although pay per click programmes are quickly dissipating, these programmes would allow you to earn money every time the unique link given was clicked (similar to the way that google adwords works).
- Pay per sale - This is where someone clicks through your website and then makes a purchase, you would then receive a commission from that sale (some programmes use cookies that allow an affiliate to receive a commission even when someone doesn't make a purchase straight away, cookie lengths can vary but as an example - if someone who clicks through your website then purchases 2 weeks later then you may still be eligible for commission).
- Pay per lead - This is where you can receive money from someone who clicks through your website and then creates an account or requests some information (these are just a couple of examples).

These days becoming an affiliate is easy and although most programme acceptances are automatic, the hard part is getting accepted by those programmes that are not. As an affiliate you get the choice of advertisement to promote whether it be a text link or graphical banner and the best part about becoming an affiliate is that it is mostly FREE to do. You can advertise at no cost and if you don't make money then you don't, but if you do then you have done so without putting your hand in your pocket.
